Traveling is an essential part of every human being. Going around different locations and experiencing new cultures broadens one’s perspective and enhances self-improvement. In fact, even history’s greatest thinkers consider traveling as an essential piece of their journey in life.

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts.” – Mark Twain.

In a post featured by the BBC, it highlighted some of the top reasons why you must travel, which include:

1. To better understand yourself
2. To broaden your perspective
3. To create memories that last longer

Among all the types of travelers, soul searchers tend to benefit the most. Like the movie ‘Eat, Pray, Love,’ those troubled and who need to find peace of mind, often consider traveling as the best option to unwind and find themselves. Consider this list of 10 soul-searching destinations in the world as listed by Travelibro.

Similarly, playing games can also have positive benefits to gamers. The American Psychological Association (APA) said that playing video games may provide social benefits, learning advantages, and development health. Video games are perceived in somewhat of a different light now, as there are some that relax the mind and enhance social connection. The study by APA stated that over 70% of gamers often play with friends while millions globally participate in virtual worlds such as the ones available online.

Gaming Realms mentions that mobile devices have opened up a completely different platform for gamers, where people can now access any games they want directly from their smartphones. The developer of online slot game software, Pocketfruity, also found that more than 50% of smartphone app usage accounts for gaming, while half of active Facebook users visit the social networking website to play games. These are found to be effective in nourishing the mind and enhancing other cognitive skills based on the games played, ie. Time-pressured games.

The growing number of people benefiting from traveling and playing games is a great indication that technology is doing its upmost to connect people.

We just hope destinations for soul-searchers will continue to be preserved by local governments. After all, these are vital tourist retreats for the wanderers amongst us to retreat to if need be.

  1. I’ve heard that travel is food for the soul. The lonely soul, well that caught my attention. I think it’s worth an experience to travel alone. Hopefully you meet new people along the way and the loneliness wears off.

  2. Travel is definitely an important way of helping the soul heal and grow. Sometimes traveling can fix things, as long as you come back home with a different perspective about life. Travel makes you see things in ways you wouldn’t otherwise.

  3. I think I am more of no. 2 and 3. I see traveling as a way of learning new things – of different cultures, of other places, of new friends. Every time I travel, I discover something new and it gives me fresh ideas about things that happen to our societies. But I also like to reminisce on my experiences when I travel because I feel good whenever I see something new.

  4. I know this is an old post but I was intrigued by the title and kinda agree with it. Traveling helps anyone to unwind and know themselves. It’s also an outlet to know other people outside your circles. What I could not agree more, is that it broadens the mind. Traveling makes us a better version of ourselves.

  5. I started traveling to create good memories, but over the years my views have changed. Memories do count but more than that travel has helped me understand myself better! 🙂

  6. Totally agree. I just wish that traveling would be so affordable! Sometimes, it’s just a matter of finding the right place and the right time. I think it’s good to have a province to go home to. Cause you could feed your lonely soul there.

  7. I was able to visit different places because I worked in an international cruise line from 2013 to 2015. It was such a great experience. I have visited mostly Caribbean islands, US, Canada and so on. I cannot afford to travel to these places on my own. I loved that I was able to meet different people and eat something new to me. It broadened my perspective in life. Hopefully, I would get another chance to travel in the future.

  8. I agree that it is so important to learn about other cultures. I have met alot of people from other countries and love learning about their life. I have traveled a lot in the states, I’ve moved about 12 times. 6 different states total. People don’t understand why I love it but it is really about learning new things and people. The internet has done so much to connect people, I don’t play games much but I have met people thru facebook etc.

  9. I’m also thinking of travelling after this semester ends. I’ve only been to a few places in the Philippines and I haven’t tried going out of the country. This post got me thinking. Maybe I’ll pack my bags and travel again this year. 🙂

  10. I don’t like travelling, I only do it for work and business purposes, though I squeeze some time to explore the area. I liked how you presented the need and benefits of travelling, to people like me who don’t like it 🙂

Keep up the good work on this blog.

  11. I’ll just stick with traveling because gaming sort of ruins my life hahaha… I’m not kidding. It eats up so much of time that I’m not able to do anything else.

  12. This is a very good point. Yes, aside from travelling, playing video games helps me stay focused. When work becomes overwhelming, I take a break and play a game. Next thing I knew, I’m already back on track. 🙂

  13. I really like your last paragraph. In the philippines, to be specific, the tourism campaign (its more fun in the philippines and now Visit Philippines Again) have been effective I should say. Nevertheless, sustainable tourism and responsible tourism are two other things which the country and other might be missing to address. We all love to travel and we all like to maintain the beauty of every place anyway. 🙂

  14. It’s been awhile since I traveled far.I read somewhere that one of the things to do to have a happy life is to travel once a year to a place you’ve never been to.I’m hoping this year that would be Singapore.
